Community-powered monitoring of REDD+ : open source technology boosts community forest monitoring

Open source technology such as smartphone apps and online mapping tools will play an increasingly important role in enabling communities to gather data on key resources and processes in a cost-effective way. This paper from the Global Canopy Programme provides a simple introduction to this emerging topic.

The paper gives a quick highlight of policy decisions supporting on the involvement of local communities in monitoring REDD+. It summarises some initiatives where this is happening, and looks at the potential of open source technology, such as Open Data Kit.
