Forest people of Tobelo Halmahera

In this video the Tobelo people, of Halmahera island, Indonesia, explain the importance of the forest to them. They describe their monitoring system that enables them to share information via SMS, on a range of issues including customary land, intimidation, and illegal logging within the indigenous territory. The communities are also under threat due to the release of hundreds of permits for mining and palm oil. They are developing participatory maps in order to strengthen their voice when negotiating with external interests, from the extractive industries to government agencies.
