Free, prior and informed consent - Surui Carbon Project

This document describes the context and approach used for the FPIC process (free, prior and informed consent) that was followed for the Suruí Carbon Project at Sete de Setembro Indigenous Territory in Rondônia and Mato Grosso states, Brazil.  It gives a detailed account of the social, cultural and legislative context, presenting information regarding the Suruí people and provides an overview of the key laws, international conventions and agreements which relate to consultation with indigenous people. The methodology it describes recognises and reinforces the self-determination of indigenous peoples, and the analysis suggests that the process could serve as a model for other projects.

The document is bilingual, with all sections provided in English and Portuguese.
