WWF began its involvement in Peru in 1969, when it contributed to the conservation of the vicuña, then at the brink of extinction, by supporting the creation of the Reserva Nacional Pampa Galeras, the first rainforest reserve in Peru. Next it participated decisively in the protection of unique ecosystems with the Parque Nacional del Manu, the Reserva Nacional de Paracas, and many others. In 1994, WWF established its first Peruvian office; in 1998, it founded the Oficina de Programa Perú de WWF. Subsequently, WWF Peru intensified its efforts to conserve biodiversity in key ecosystems in the coast, the Andes and the Amazon by collaborating with the Peruvian government and with indigenous and local communities.
