The National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) is the Brazilian government body that establishes and carries out policies relating to indigenous peoples. It is responsible for mapping out and protecting lands traditionally inhabited and used by these communities. This includes studies to identify and formally demarcate Indigenous Territories.

FUNAI monitors and administers Indigenous Territories with the inhabitants. It promotes and implements policies for sustainable development of indigenous peoples. This includes culturally-sensitive development, conservation and environmental restoration in Indigenous Territories, addressing land tenure conflicts, and action to prevent invasions and unwanted interference from outsiders.

FUNAI also oversees and implements policies to protect isolated and recently-contacted peoples.
