Project Fauna (Stanford University)

Actor Type

Project Fauna is a collaborative effort by university researchers and the indigenous peoples of the Rupununi region of Guyana and the Raposa/Serra do Sol region of Roraima, Brazil to describe wildlife diversity and abundance and interactions between these elements and indigenous culture.  In Guyana information has been recorded for about 300 vertebrate species. Three hundred and five indigenous technicians surveyed their land as part of the project and collected data including but not limited to soil and vegetative biomass, fruit trees, hunting and biodiversity. Techniques described in Project Fauna's publications may be of use to community-based forest monitoring projects seeking to monitor similar themes.
