SilvaCarbon is a flagship programme under the United States fast start financing for REDD+ and is a U.S. contribution to the Forest Carbon Tracking task of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO).
SilvaCarbon is a collaborative programme that combines the strengths of a number of US federal agencies. Drawing on the expertise of the U.S. scientific and technical community and working in partnership with developing countries and others, the programme aims to enhance capacity worldwide for monitoring and managing forest and terrestrial carbon by identifying, testing, and disseminating good practices and cost-effective, accurate technologies. The SilvaCarbon Portal is designed to be the key online focal point for the latest information and updates on the activities of the GEO FCT task: intended user groups include policymakers, Data providing agencies, national authorities, members of the scientific and technical community and the general public.
SilvaCarbon is actively engaged in a number of countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas. US SilvaCarbon acts as the Capacity Building Pillar of the GEO’s Global Forests Observation Initiative, which provides countries with the satellite data and methodologies needed for their formal reporting into frameworks such as UNFCCC.
