University College London - Extreme Citizen Scence research group

Actor Type

ExCiteS is an inter-disciplinary research group at University College London that supports 'extreme citizen science'.  It works with broad networks of people to design and build new devices and bottom-up knowledge creation processes that take into account local needs, practices and cultures.

The project 'From illiterate data collection to intelligent maps' is being tested and used in community-based forest monitoring initiatives in the Congo rainforests and in Brazil. The aim is to design, develop, evaluate and deploy a generic platform (Sapelli) that enables people with no or limited literacy to use smartphones and tablets to collect, share, and analyse (spatial) data.

To extend participation beyond data collection, ExCiteS plans to introduce novel approaches to visualisation, analysis and editing of spatio-temporal data, comprehensible for non-literate users.
